As mentioned here elsewhere (Nov 2023 I think – sorry!) life has been somewhat disrupted for me of late. I came home in summer 2023 to care for both my parents – and as time went on, both slipped away, in fairly quick succession.
Unsurprisingly this has disrupted my life, quite a lot. It was my parents who introduced me to travel, deserts and to writing, so their absence casts a dark shadow.
Whilst caring for them however I was able, in my quieter moments, to write a book dealing with the high points of 30 years (until now) of bouncing around Africa and Asia in Land Rovers. Of course I’ve been lucky enough to see Europe and North America in a similar way, but I wanted to distil the most significant events and record them – being arrested as a spy in Egypt, being shot at in Oman and again whilst crossing from Sudan into Egypt, anti-poaching patrols, lion census work, mountain rescue and rainforest mapping in Kenya, meeting gunrunners in Morocco, meeting an old N@zi in Jordan and so on.
Sadly my parents died before the book was published, thanks to a delay with the first publishers who took on the project, but the book had finally emerged blinking into the light and is now on sale. It’s called “The Unbeaten Track”, published by Scorpion Press in the UK and is available for £35.

The book is a large format hardback with lots of full-page colour images. Sadly that affects weight and thus postage. Current politics and economic situations make worldwide postage £35 😦
